Our Commercial Cattle

Cows

Our Legacy Commercial herd of Hereford cattle has been a staple of Twelve Oaks for years. We look for very similar traits in our commercial herd as we do our Purebred herd. Females are scored on feet and legs, body condition and udder to make sure they will be walking the fields for year to come, cows need to be able to graze all summer and raise a good calf at weaning. The best of this herd has moved into a different role, being part of our ET program as Recip cows. Having the ability to carry and raise great calves gives these females a dual purpose for us. Either raising a Purebred embryo calf or their own natural commercial calf year after year, makes these cattle just as important to the future of Twelve Oaks as the Purebred females.

Bulls

At Twelve Oaks we only use Purebred bulls on our commercial herd. This helps ensure we are getting the best traits available to help us improve future generations of our commercial herd. A well selected Purebred bull for the commercial group gives us the ability to utilize him on the Purebred females as well, should we need our walking bull to clean up some of the AI group from time to time. We usually have 2 walking bulls at anytime on the farm. We select one bull for heifer breeding (calving ease, low birth weight), this helps to ensure that heifer will have an easier time with her first calf. The second bull we use on our mature cow herd can have a little higher birth weight, but we look for bigger gains from birth to wean. We spend a lot of time studying and researching bulls to try and keep us on the front line of new genetics from all over North America
